Spirituality, anxiety and depression, substance abuse, life transitions, relationship dynamics and communications, grief and loss, and self-esteem.

Steve (he/him/his) is a licensed independent social worker in  Suite 23 in the Iowa City office, who works with individuals and couples 18 years of age and older. He considers himself a 'meat and potatoes' kind of therapist, and has been called "the weathered therapist", because he's 'been there and done that' in many ways.  In turn he gives of himself with compassion and humor, sharing what he's learned the hard way, or however life lessons may come. Steve has worked in adolescent residential  treatment, home and school-based therapy services, inpatient psychiatric units, outpatient clinical services at community mental health centers, worked seventeen years as a chaplain in a substance abuse residential treatment center, pastored a Mennonite congregation, and most recently was a therapist at a community college in Kansas.

His primary approach is person-centered, using solution focused therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Therapy, all steeped in his studies and practice in family systems, as needed to address the complex challenges you may be facing. Steve enjoys making music- guitar, voice, writing music- writing his memoirs, spending time with his wife of 46 years, his son, daughter and grandsons, and reading good books.
